BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN ON TOUR 1968-2005 Dave Marsh

“When engaged in the activity known as Bruce Springsteen, grown men and women have been known to roll up their eyes and emit a mighty roar, thus: “Broooce!” repeated so often that it could be taken for the lowing of cows overdue for milking.”—from the Introduction

Bruce Springsteen is an American icon and BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN ON TOUR (Bloomsbury; ISBN: 1-59691-282-0; Publication date: October 13, 2006) is an amazing, three-decade celebration of the greatest live performer of all time. It is a way to slow down the Springsteen phenomenon and hold onto a bigger piece of

his legend than has been previously captured in print, photographs, recordings or on video. From longtime biographer and renowned music writer Dave Marsh, Bruce Springsteen on Tour is more personal than Marsh’s previous biographies Born to Run and Glory Days because he has written it as a fan who has had the unbelievable good fortune to be present for many of the milestones in Springsteen’s career. Authorized by Springsteen, it is an intimate look at the touring life of one of America’s most beloved musicians from the man who knows him best. Marsh takes us on an intimate trip from Bruce’s first concert at the Woodhaven Swim Club in Freehold, New Jersey, through the 5 history-making nights at the Bottom Line in 1975 just before the release of Born to Run, all the way to his sold-out 2005 Devils & Dust tour.

Seeing Springsteen live is an incredible experience for any fan, but sometimes an impossible one. The stunning photographs and artifacts here, along with Marsh’s extraordinary behind-the-scenes account, offer the closest thing possible to actually being there. Marsh communicates the exuberance of the music, shows how songs evolve night after night throughout a tour until they take the form we know today, and, most importantly, he brings Bruce’s immense persona to life on the page. While following Springsteen’s career, Marsh also illuminates rock’s progression from the grubby, amateurish venues of the late 1960s to the giant arenas and intense professionalism of today.

About the author: Dave Marsh is one of rock’s best-known critics. He has written two best-selling Bruce Springsteen biographies, Born to Run and Glory Days, as well as more than a dozen other books. He was a founding editor of Creem and worked for five years at Rolling Stone. Marsh now hosts Kick Out the Jams with Dave Marsh, a talk show about music on Sirius Satellite Radio Network. He lives in Norwalk, Connecticut.
