Charlie Haden told a story from the stage this past Sunday at Lincoln Center, where his latest project, "Charlie Haden Family & Friends: Rambling Boy,", was making its live debut. Haden recounts seeing Dan Tyminksi backstage at the Grammys just after Tyminski's win for ‘Oh Brother Where Art Thou’s “Man of Constant Sorrow.”
Said Haden: "I just went up to Dan and said 'Man. Thanks for bringing country music back.”
But to the thousands assembled, this comment could just as well be applied to Haden himself, who led a Nashville dream-team made up of Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Jim Mills, Bryan Sutton, Mark Fain and Mr. Tyminski. For their performance, the ensemble “drew deeply from 'Rambling Boy,' an effervescent album due out on Decca next month,” raved The New York Times. “Single Girl, Married Girl” allowed the Haden triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya) to show off their beautiful and seemingly innate ability to perfectly execute three-part harmony. Charlie was also joined by his wife Ruth Cameron, and his son Josh Haden -- who gave what the Times deemed a “stirring” performance his original composition, “Spiritual,” which was memorably covered on Johnny Cash's Grammy winning 'Unchained' album.
Charlie Haden spent most of the evening behind his stand-up bass, but even stepped out briefly to harmonize with daughter Petra on one song. While the assembled instrumental virtuosos by and large contented themselves with providing the delicate backing for the Hadens’ voices, they couldn't resist closing the show with a "burner," and the fireworks flew on the finale performance of “Old Joe Clark.”
An iconic figure in jazz and American music, Haden began his musical career when he was just two years old, singing on the radio with his parents and siblings in the late 1930s. He returns to those roots on ‘Rambling Boy,’ fulfilling his dream to play the Haden Family songs with his wife and children -- as well as close friends in the worlds of both country and jazz, including Pat Metheny, Vince Gill, Bruce Hornsby, Ricky Skaggs, Rosanne Cash, Elvis Costello, Dan Tyminski, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush and many more.
