Cory Chisel has called Appleton, WI home for most of his twenty-six years. But his family roots reach about 500 miles north and west to Babbitt, MN, and the neighboring town of Ely, near the pristine Boundary Waters region straddling the US/Canadian border.
The vast, open spaces and clear, deep lakes of the wild north are ingrained in Cory's songs, which sound as if they came to him as naturally as breathing. Intimate and soulful, unadorned yet plainly beautiful, most of the songs on Chisel's new 'Cabin Ghosts' EP were written in the region, and one of them was even recorded there (in a cabin, natch). "Maybe it's a place of reflection. Maybe it's a mystical place. I know it's where my songs are most easily formed, musically and spiritually," he says.
